Jurji Zaydan was born in Beirut in 1861. He was apprenticed to a cobbler after completing his primary education and enrolling at medical school in what would become the American University of Beirut. Following his dismissal from his studies, Zaydan moved to Cairo, where he became a leading figure of the Arab Awakening of the nineteenth century and was responsible for reinvigorating Arabic literature and journalism.
