Professor of political history at the Mohammed V University in Rabat, he founded the Ibn Rushd Center for Studies and Communication in Rabat. Previously he has worked as Acting Chair of the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa, a Visiting Scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Gaston Bergé University, Senegal. He has taught in Moroccan, Senegalese and American universities, and heads the “Freedom Now” association in defense of media freedoms. His books include: The Moroccan Monarchy and the Power Struggle (1992), A Political Biography of Mahdi Ben Barka (co-author, 2000), Confrontations between Islamists and Secularists in Morocco (2008), and The Press in Morocco between Reporting and Defaming (2019).
