The General Director of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies and the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies is deeply saddened by the passing of the renowned Palestinian Scholar Elia Zureik. Dr Zureik, a former professor for the Doha Institute and visiting researcher at the ACRPS and Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Queen's University in Ontario, Canada, passed on 16 January 2023.

Dr Zureik was one of the first professors at the Doha Institute, where he served as chair of the Sociology Program (2015-2017), and a member of the DI’s first Board of Trustees, contributing enthusiastically and skilfully to the founding work of the Institute. He also contributed his knowledge as a consultant to the editorial board of the Omran journal (2015-2019), and as a visiting researcher at the Arab Center (2018-2019). As one of the most prominent Arab sociologists around the world, he published Israel's Colonial Project in Palestine: Brutal Pursuit in 2016 and Global Surveillance and Policing: Borders, Security, Identity in 2005.

Among his friends, colleagues, and students, Elia was known for his humility and gentle character as well as his scholarly diligence and attentiveness as a teacher.
