Fischedick presented “Energy Policy in the European Union,” focusing on Germany’s experience in transitioning to a viable and diversified energy system and the country’s success in introducing a large proportion of renewable energies into its energy mix and into electricity generation in particular. The guest speaker utilized a multi-tiered approach to the analysis of the German and European energy system which comprised three levels: the micro level, which addresses the scientific and technological dimension, that is, the available renewable energy technologies; the intermediate level which is concerned with the political, economic and social dimensions and, in particular, the policy-making process and framework in which this process takes place; and the macro level represented by the global energy
market and prices and the geopolitical dimension.
