Three US universities have listed the Doha Historical Dictionary in their digital libraries, reflecting a growing interest within Western academic circles. The University of Michigan,University of Washington, and Georgetown University Qatar have now joined the ranks of Cornell University in the United States and the University of British Columbia in Canada, both of which took the initiative to list the dictionary in their digital libraries last March.
Mohammed Al Ubaidi, Executive Director of the Dictionary, once again welcomed the move, emphasizing that its growing presence in university libraries worldwide constitutes recognition of its scholarly value and the importance of its accessibility to researchers interested in Arabic language, culture and civilization worldwide. He noted that this also demonstrates the ability of Arab academic institutions to execute projects that enhance the standing of the Arabic language in global scholarship and open up broader avenues for academic and intellectual collaboration. He added that there is strong interest among Arab universities and institutions concerned with Arabic to make the dictionary available to their students and researchers, and that discussions are already under way with several to develop partnerships.
The Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language is one of the largest projects of the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies. It was officially launched on 25 May 2013 and its completion announced on 22 December 2025. More than 500 researchers from across the Arab world contributed to its development. The dictionary remains under continuous development due to its ongoing interaction with a living language, as well as its openness to public feedback and suggestions.
